A special celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Month took place at Wrigley Field in Chicago during a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. The event brought together representatives of the Ukrainian American community, diplomats, veterans, and American partners, providing another opportunity to draw attention to Ukraine and its fight for freedom.

The special ceremony took place on August 19 as part of the baseball Crosstown Series at one of the most famous sports venues in the United States — Wrigley Field — where the Chicago Cubs faced the Chicago White Sox.
The event was organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, Illinois Division, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Ukraine in Chicago and with the participation of Ukrainian American and Ukrainian veterans.
Representatives of Illinois’ Ukrainian community working in diplomacy, military and veteran affairs, medicine, finance, and humanitarian assistance joined the commemoration. Among the distinguished guests was also U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley, a member of the House of Representatives.
During the ceremony, the significant contribution of several generations of Ukrainian Americans to the development of the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois was recognized, while support was also expressed for the Ukrainian people, who continue their struggle for freedom and independence.
The organizers emphasized that events like this help strengthen the presence of the Ukrainian American community in Chicago’s public life and draw the attention of American society to Ukraine.
UCCA Illinois also invited the community to join the upcoming events dedicated to Ukraine’s Independence Day:
- August 21 — Raising of the Ukrainian national flag at Daley Plaza;
- August 22 — Ukraine and the World: Global Insights Forum;
- August 23 — Unity March marking Ukraine’s Independence Day.
The organizers are encouraging Ukrainians, friends of Ukraine, partners, and all concerned residents of Chicago and Illinois to take part in the celebratory and community events dedicated to Ukrainian independence.
