Ukraine and the United States announce three new projects in the field of small modular reactors

At the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Ukraine and the United States announced the implementation of three joint projects in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs). The new initiatives are part of the FIRST program (Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology), which aims to strengthen energy security and decarbonization.

This was reported by Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

As reported during the conference, the projects cover the following areas:

  • The construction of a hydrogen and ammonia plant is a pilot project that will allow the development of clean energy sources.
  •  Modernization of coal-fired power plants - introduction of small modular reactors for a gradual transition to carbon-free technologies.
  • Industrial decarbonization - creating a roadmap for reducing emissions in the steel industry.

In his speech, Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko emphasized that the development of nuclear energy is a key element of Ukraine's energy strategy.

“Despite all the challenges, including the occupation of Zaporizhzhia NPP, Ukraine remains committed to the development of nuclear energy, including the latest technologies such as small modular reactors,” the minister said.

The FIRST program involves leading energy companies and research centers in the United States and Ukraine, as well as ensuring high standards of nuclear safety and non-proliferation.

The announced projects will contribute to Ukraine's post-war recovery, energy independence, and climate goals.
