The famous historian and author of the best-selling book "On Tyranny" Timothy Snyder gave an interview to The Guardian in which he shared his opinion on how Donald Trump's policies could affect Russia's war against Ukraine. He believes that US President-elect Donald Trump is "Russia's only chance to win the war". Allegedly, Russia has been hoping for Trump's return to power since the beginning of the war, as he could stop supporting Kyiv. The interview also touches on Trump's alarming dependence on Elon Musk, drawing historical parallels to the influence of oligarchs on Russian politics.
Timothy Snyder said in an interview with The Guardian.
"If Trump were to leave politics, Russia's strategy towards Ukraine could be completely different," Snyder told the publication.
Regarding Trump's policies, Snyder expressed doubts about his ability to support Ukraine. He called the former president "Russia's only chance to win the war," as Trump's rhetoric has always been favorable to the Kremlin.
"The scenario is that Trump is being made to understand that Vladimir Putin is taunting him, and therefore Trump must do the right thing. But so far in his career, Trump seems to have enjoyed being intimidated by Putin. And so far, [Trump's] strategy on Ukraine, as far as they've discovered it, is not to make Russia weaker, but to make Ukraine weaker," the historian stressed.
Snyder also criticized the influence of Elon Musk, who, according to him, finances Trump's campaigns. He called Trump's dependence on Musk "disturbing" and drew parallels to the 1990s in Russia, when oligarchs controlled President Boris Yeltsin.
