Ukrainian community honours Taras Shevchenko's memory in Los Angeles

On 9 March, the Ukrainian Cultural Center of Los Angeles hosted a gala evening dedicated to the memory of Taras Shevchenko. The event was organised by six Ukrainian organisations that are members of the American Coalition of Ukrainian Organisations. The event brought together approximately 70 participants who came to honour the 211th anniversary of the Great Kobzar's birth and to support humanitarian initiatives for Ukraine.

Angelika Khaynka, CEO of the charity organisation Angels for Ukraine, told Vilni Media.

"I am delighted that the most active charitable organisations in Los Angeles have come together today to start a wonderful tradition of organising joint events to support Ukraine. It is extremely important for us, mothers, to show and tell our children about their roots and the strength of spirit that runs in their veins," said Angelika Hajnka, founder of Angels of Ukraine.

The event was organized by six organizations in the American Coalition of Ukrainian Organizations, including the Ukrainian Cultural Center, Ukrainian Art Center, Post Angeles, Ridna Shkola, Angels of Ukraine, Globe4Ukraine and UNWLA.

The evening was filled with artistic performances by the Chervona Kalyna ensemble, students of Ridna Shkola reciting Shevchenko's poems, and musical performances by Iryna Reznytska, INKA, Vsudysvoya and Ksenia Doroshenko. There was also an exhibition of Ukrainian artists whose works could be purchased.

Charitable foundations presented their activities and explained how they help Ukraine. Guests also had the opportunity to sample traditional Ukrainian cuisine and take part in a charity raffle.

All funds raised at the event will be used to support humanitarian initiatives and Ukraine's defence efforts.

Anzhelika Khaynka emphasised the importance of uniting Ukrainians in these difficult times, as such events not only popularise Ukrainian culture, but also strengthen community ties and help Ukraine in its time of need.

"There were about 70 guests at today's event and the atmosphere was surprisingly warm and sincere. However, it is difficult to see the daily news of the suffering of children, the elderly and even animals as a result of the war. That is why the activities of our foundation are aimed at helping those who need it most. Shevchenko has always brought Ukrainians together. And now, at a time of unprecedented challenges, we are even more aware of who we are, what we do and what we strive for. Our main goal is to help Ukraine survive," concludes the founder of Angels of Ukraine.
