У січні 2025 року дитяча книга “Королева Спотляндії”, написана 17-річними братом і сестрою Анною та Яном Бернеттами у співпраці з українсько-американською письменницею Ганною Т. Петрик, посіла перше місце в категорії мультикультурних дитячих казок на платформі Amazon у США.

This cheerful story is the result of many years of work. In a TV interviewdedicated to the book's success, the twins from Arizona said they started working on the book in 2017, when they were just 10 years old. The inspiration was their family pet, Becky the Dalmatian, who the family jokingly refers to as the "Queen of Spotland".
Initially, the story focused on the dog's energetic and mischievous behaviour, as well as the theme of responsible pet ownership. The book also touches on the misuse of technology, the importance of traditions, the courage to be honest and Ukrainian culture, symbolised by her grandmother. Over time, the idea grew into an in-depth "story within a story", covering a number of important topics close to the children's audience.
"We wanted to show that being a pet owner is not only a joy, but also a great responsibility," the authors explain.
The book is structured as the story of a Ukrainian grandmother reading a fairy tale to her American grandchildren. Through the adventures of five Dalmatians in the fictional kingdom of Spotland, the authors introduce readers to Ukrainian culture, family traditions, moral values and sense of humour. It is ideal for children aged 6 to 12.
І хоча “Королева Спотляндії” — дебютна публікація Анни та Яна, у 2024 році Анна самостійно розробила дві короткометражні анімації для молодших дітей: “Футбольний м’яч” та “Космічні кулі хаосу”. Також уже ведеться робота над другою частиною книги — “Різдво в Спотленді” (“Christmas in Spotland”), яку автори планують випустити до кінця 2025 року. Перша книга, за їхніми словами, є приквелом і лише відкриває сюжетні лінії, що розгорнуться у повній історії.
It is worth adding that both authors recently graduated from the ASU Preparatory Digital Academy with top grades. After graduation, they decided to spend this year promoting their book, meeting with their children, reading at school and preparing for college. Both plan to attend Texas A&M University in the autumn.
When they meet with students, Anna and Ian often get questions about the writing process, which is the part that fascinates young readers the most.
"We always tell them that no matter how old you are, if you have a dream, work on it and you will achieve your goal," the authors said.
Співавторка книжки, Ганна Т. Петрик, українсько-американська дитяча письменниця та освітянка. Народжена в Україні, вона іммігрувала до США у 2000 році. Після окупації її рідного міста у 2014 році — події, що вплинули на її родину та друзів, змусивши багатьох залишити домівки — її життєві пріоритети змінилися. У своїх книжках вона прагне ділитися добрими, змістовними історіями для дітей, відкриваючи їм красу української культури й допомагаючи осмислювати виклики сучасності. Ганна також є щасливою власницею далматина, і її досвід з цією породою збагатив сюжет «Королеви Спотляндії».
Автори книги впевнені, що «Королева Спотляндії» — це не лише дитяча казка, а й приклад того, як родинна творчість, любов до тварин і культурна спадщина можуть об’єднати покоління.
