First Picnic Held in Oregon as Part of Ukrainian Addiction Prevention Program

A themed picnic for Ukrainians took place at George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego, Oregon, organized by the Ukrainian Foundation in cooperation with the Oregon Health Authority. This was the first event of the PHOCUS educational and prevention program aimed at preventing alcohol, drug, and other substance use among the Ukrainian community in the U.S.

This was reported by Ukrainian Foundation.

More than thirty participants attended the event, which combined outdoor recreation, informal communication, delicious food, art therapy sessions for children and adults, and the first conversation about mental health and resilience during emigration. Special attention was given to supporting families who have experienced war, relocation, and adaptation.

During the meeting, participants got to know each other, discussed the challenges of resettlement, learned about the role of stress in the development of addictions, and shared personal stories.

Speakers explained how the loss of familiar surroundings, traumatic experiences, and isolation can affect mental health and increase risks.

The event format was designed to foster a trusting atmosphere – without pressure, in a warm and welcoming community.

About the program:

The PHOCUS: SUD Prevention for Ukrainian Community program consists of 20 sessions and includes regular meetings between Ukrainians in the U.S. and experts in mental health and addiction prevention. Educational modules are combined with creative activities, art therapy, and group discussions. Organizers aim to create a safe space for the community to receive support, knowledge, and practical skills to maintain resilience in challenging adaptation conditions.

The PHOCUS program is based on an extensive needs assessment of the Ukrainian community in the U.S. According to research, over 50% of youth in Oregon have mental health diagnoses, and around 90% have a history of psychoactive substance use.
