As part of celebrations marking the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s renewed Independence, a special screening of the documentary drama “Yaroslav the Wise: Father-in-Law of Europe” by director Olesya Nohina took place at Ukraine House in Washington, D.C. The event was part of the film marathon “Culture Against War”, supported by the Watch Ukrainian! Association.
This was reported by Ukraine House.
“The film ‘Yaroslav the Wise – Father-in-Law of Europe’ explores the role of Kyivan Rus in world history and brings to light contemporary European discussions around Ukrainian identity and cultural heritage,” said representatives of Watch Ukrainian!
The film tells the story of one of the most powerful rulers of Kyivan Rus, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who succeeded in uniting the lands around Kyiv and transforming Rus into a strong medieval European state. The documentary gives special attention to lesser-known details about Yaroslav’s marriage to the Swedish princess Ingegerd. Thanks to their active dynastic diplomacy, the princely couple’s children entered into marriage alliances with royal families across Europe, securing long-lasting international ties for Kyivan Rus.
“Our guests had a unique opportunity to journey through the history of Ukraine, exploring the legacy of Kyivan Rus and the close connections Yaroslav fostered with Europe,” the organizers noted.
Prior to the screening, Kateryna Smagliy, Counselor at the Embassy of Ukraine, welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy during wartime. The organizers expressed their gratitude to all who contributed to the evening:
“We are deeply grateful to the Embassy of Ukraine in the USA and the Watch Ukrainian! Association for supporting this film marathon. Sincere thanks to all our guests who joined us in honoring Ukraine’s history during our Independence celebrations,” they concluded.
