In Upper Moreland Township, at the Penn Cinema Huntingdon Valley movie theater, a special screening of the biographical drama Malevych by director Daria Onyshchenko will take place on September 18. The film tells the story of Ukrainian artist Kazimir Malevych — the creator of the legendary Black Square, which forever changed world art.

The film tells the story of the life and struggle of Kazimir Malevych — a Ukrainian artist whose painting Black Square forever changed the course of world art. At the center is the artist’s opposition to the Soviet system, his search for freedom, and his inner drama. It intertwines key events from the artist’s life with modern echoes of the struggle for Ukraine’s freedom and independence.
Malevych is not a classical biopic, but a symbolic portrait of Ukraine, seen through the prism of an artist whose art refused to bow before Soviet authority,"* the authors emphasize.
The film presents the idea that Russia has tried to appropriate Malevych’s legacy, as it has with many other Ukrainian artists, but now Ukraine is reclaiming him for its people.
"They want to kill us just because we are Ukrainians,” — is heard in the film, reminding us of the inseparable link between the past and the present.
In leading roles: People's Artist of Ukraine Vitaliy Azhnov, as well as Irma Vitovska-Vantsa, Khrystyna Fedorak, Maryna Koshkina, Daria Tvoronovych, Oleksandr Rudynsky, Oleksiy Horbunov, Nataliya Vasko, and others.
The film was made with the support of the State Film Agency of Ukraine and the Serbia Film Center. The final scenes were shot in de-occupied Moshchun in the Kyiv region — as a symbol of the resilience of art and memory.
