US President Joe Biden has announced $7.9 billion in defense aid for Ukraine and imposed new sanctions on Russia. In turn, the US Department of Defense announced additional security assistance to provide Ukraine with the tools it needs to win the fight against Russian aggression.
This was reported in President Joe Biden's statement on U.S. support for Ukraine on the White House website.
"For nearly three years, the United States has rallied the world to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom from Russian aggression, and my Administration has made it a top priority to provide Ukraine with the support it needs to win. During this time, Ukraine has won the battle for Kyiv, regained more than half of the territory that Russia seized at the beginning of the war, and defended its sovereignty and independence. But much remains to be done. That is why today I am announcing a sharp increase in security assistance to Ukraine and a series of additional measures to help Ukraine win this war. I have directed the Department of Defense to release all remaining security assistance funds appropriated for Ukraine for the remainder of my term", Biden said in a statement.
Of the $7.9 billion, $5.5 billion will be provided through the Presidential Defense Assistance (PDA) program from Pentagon stockpiles, and $2.4 billion will be provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which includes the purchase of weapons from manufacturers.
Biden also ordered the Pentagon to repair and provide Ukraine with an additional battery of Patriot missile defense systems and missiles.
In addition, the Pentagon is providing Ukraine with a new military aid package worth $375 million. According to the Pentagon's website, the new package includes
- Air-to-ground munitions;
- Highly Maneuverable Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) ammunition;
- 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;
- Tube-launched optical tracked and wire-guided (TOW) missiles;
- Javelin and AT-4 antitank systems;
- M1117 armored security vehicles;
- Light Tactical Vehicles;
- armored bridge systems;
- small arms
- Patrol Boats;
- Mine clearance equipment and ammunition;
- spare parts, support equipment, services, training and transportation.
