A family of Ukrainians who moved to the United States to escape war and occupation in Kherson have died in North Carolina during Hurricane Helene. The victims were reportedly Anastasia Novitnya-Segen and her husband Dmytro. Their 13-year-old son Yevhen and grandmother Tatiana are still missing.
This was reported by USA Today.
The family fled Kherson after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion and made their way through Russia, Latvia and Lithuania to Poland, where they stayed with a friend. After several months of paperwork, the family was admitted to the United States in the summer of 2022 as part of a humanitarian programme for Ukrainian refugees.
Settling in Mikaville, North Carolina, the family tried to start a new life, but tragedy struck in late September when a hurricane caused the South Too River near their home to rise 20 feet (six metres). The bodies of Anastasia and Dmytro were found dozens of miles from their home, and the search for Yevhen and grandmother Tatiana continues.
According to USA Today, the death toll from Hurricane Helene has now reached 228, including 81 people from North Carolina who are still missing.
