Ukrainians in Washington Protest Against Pro-Russian Pianist’s Performance at Kennedy Center

A demonstration took place outside the Kennedy Center, where Ukrainian and American activists expressed outrage over the performance of Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky, who has openly supported Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Lugansky is a well-known supporter of Putin’s policies. He has performed in occupied Ukrainian Crimea in violation of international law and has been awarded a state honor by Russia for his “contribution to the development of national and world music.” The Ukrainian community considers his presence on the Kennedy Center stage part of Russia’s cultural propaganda aimed at legitimizing war crimes.

The protest gathered Ukrainian activists and American allies of Ukraine. Participants distributed informational materials and sought to raise awareness among event attendees. One of the symbolic elements of the protest was a child’s piano covered in bloodstains, representing the tragedies caused by Russia in Ukraine.

Organizers reported that they had previously contacted the Kennedy Center, demanding that Lugansky’s performance be canceled, but received no response. Surprised by the stance of such a prestigious cultural institution, the activists obtained an official permit to hold the demonstration.

The protest sparked mixed reactions among Kennedy Center visitors. Many Americans showed keen interest in the event, thanked Ukrainians for their relentless fight, and encouraged them to continue organizing similar actions. However, a few individuals, likely of pro-Russian views, expressed dissatisfaction, made obscene gestures, and attempted to discredit the protesters.

The protest organizers are calling on all Americans to contact the Kennedy Center and demand an end to providing a platform for representatives of Russian cultural propaganda who publicly support the aggressor’s actions and violate international law.

"Our message is clear: no platform for Putin’s propaganda. The Kennedy Center has no right to legitimize supporters of war crimes," stated protest organizer Maryna Lvovska.

This protest is yet another testament to the fact that Russian culture cannot be separated from the Kremlin’s politics. The Ukrainian community in the U.S. continues to monitor all manifestations of Russian fascism on American soil and to combat the use of art as a tool of the aggressor’s propaganda.
