Suspect in double murder arrested in North Carolina: Ukrainian refugee among the dead

A suspect in a double murder that occurred in Moore County, North Carolina, was arrested. Among the dead was 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee Kateryna Tovmash, who, together with her younger sisters, found refuge in the United States from the war in Ukraine under her care.

According to the investigation, at about 7:45 a.m., local law enforcement officers responded to a report of a shooting at a residential building on Daphne Lane in the Woodlake area. Upon arriving at the scene, they found two dead inside.

One of the dead was 28-year-old Matthew Wade, a U.S. Army soldier who served at Fort Bragg and was originally from Mississippi.

The second victim was 21-year-old Kateryna Tovmash, a Ukrainian refugee from Ukraine who was caring for her younger sisters.

The suspect in the crime was Kateryna's 25-year-old ex-boyfriend. According to the investigation, he left the scene and the county before police arrived. Warrants have been issued for his arrest on charges of illegal entry into a dwelling and two counts of murder. 

Later, the media reported that the suspect was detained in Ohio. Ohio law enforcement officers.

"This is a tragic and senseless loss of life. Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased at this difficult time," said County Sheriff Fields.

Law enforcement officers emphasized that the incident was isolated in nature: all those involved were familiar with each other, and there is no further threat to the Woodlake community.

The investigation lasts.

Let us remind you that this is not the first tragedy in the United States involving Ukrainian immigrants. Iryna Zarutska was murdered in the same state in August 2025.
